In 1976, Marthinsen began his apprenticeship with Cappelen in Oslo. This marked the beginning of a long professional career in which the education and training of musical instrument makers has been a central focus.

In 1999, TVD Musikk Instrument Akademiet AS relocated to the municipality of Sarpsborg. The entire institution was established in the Cultural Quarter, where the academy developed dedicated workshops, its own sound studio, and large facilities for concerts and other cultural activities.
