MIA - Musical Instrument Academy

Welcome to the Musical Instrument Academy

We have been working in the music industry since 1984, where we have trained musical instrument makers in all disciplines of the music industry. [read more...]

Will the music become silent?
In the future, will music only exist on sheet music in archives, performed electronically, or will we have the opportunity to play instruments? Instruments require professionals: instrument makers, repairers, tuners and restorers. But the knowledge and intangible cultural heritage in this field is disappearing.

Musical instrument maker schools and knowledge organisations have disappeared in several countries and are only present at a critical minimum level in others. Throughout Norway, the Nordic countries and the Baltic states, there is a lack of professionals and educational institutions to look after the field.

The aim of the work is to preserve and develop what exists, so that the music industry can develop sustainably in line with the UN's goals.

The Musical Instrument Academy will establish a knowledge environment for instrument makers, repairers, tuners, restorers, musical instrument maker schools, museums, churches, festivals, wholesalers, acoustics institutes, guilds, musicians, orchestras and education.

No musical instrument making school,
no musical instrument maker,
No repairers,
No restaurateur,
no voices
- no music and dancing!

Here we present new and old about our business!

It started with Arnfred Marthinsen in a small workshop in Fredrikstad - and ended up shaping Norwegian instrument history.

With his company Instrumentmakeren, Arnfred Marthinsen established himself as the musicians’ repair specialist in Fredrikstad in 1984. Professional performers, students, amateur musicians and entire orchestras came here for assistance, advice, and repairs — and before long, the small workshop became a gathering point for the region’s musical life.

What began with tuning jobs, adjustments and repairs quickly grew into a creative environment where expertise, curiosity and craftsmanship went hand in hand. Over the years, hundreds of instruments were rescued, restored and given new life - while young talents had their first encounters with instrument craftsmanship.

This culture of quality craftsmanship and passion became the foundation for what would later become the Musical Instrument Academy and the festival tradition that has brought together musicians, instrument makers, and industry professionals from across Europe.
